Medical professionals urge caution as holiday gatherings draw near.

While the risk of getting COVID-19 is still considered low in San Antonio, cases have been slowly and steadily increasing this December.As San Antonio hospitals grapple with a “tripledemic” of COVID-19, respiratory syncytial virus and influenza, medical professionals are urging caution this holiday season.
“Some people are getting flu and COVID, or COVID and RSV at the same time,” said Amar Sunkari, an internal medicine specialist at Texas Vista Medical Center. “So COVID is not killing people by itself, but in combination, a significant number of patients are being admitted to the hospital.” Still, the cases during that period this month number more than those from the same period in December 2020 and in December 2021 combined, according to the health data. And for the same period in December the last three years, the case count among people ages 5 to 64 went from 98 to 227 to 748.
“This is a big jump in respiratory illnesses this year,” Sunkari said. “Before, influenza used to be a relatively mild illness in the general population. Now even influenza is acting up more than usual. People are having more symptoms, using a considerable amount of over-the-counter medications, which are also failing, and then ending up in the hospital.”
