San Antonio Spurs guard Devonte' Graham drives between Detroit Pistons guard Killian Hayes and Jalen Duren in the second half of an NBA basketball game in Detroit, Friday, Feb. 10, 2023. DETROIT - Devonte’ Graham was playing “Call of Duty” when his agent told him at 1:45 p.m. Thursday that New Orleans had traded him to the Spurs.
Graham set a record for most points scored in a Spurs debut, besting the 30 Willie Anderson posted as a rookie in the 1988-89 season opener against the Los Angeles Lakers. Graham hit 9 of 21 shots, including his first attempt, a pull-up 3-pointer with 3:59 left in the first period. He finished 6 of 15 from 3-point range, the most attempts from beyond the arc by any player in league history in his first game with a team.“It’s always good to see your first shot go in,” Graham said. “And then I just kept being aggressive and the guys just kept finding me.”Still, it was quite a performance after he came to the Spurs averaging just 5.
The Spurs, who play at Atlanta on Saturday, suited up just 10 players after listing seven as out, including leading scorer Keldon Johnson and fellow starters Tre Jones , Jeremy Sochan and Devin Vassell . “Considering everything, I thought they were great,” Popovich said. “A lineup that never saw each other before, a couple of guys just got here. I couldn’t ask any more. … A hell of an effort by a lot of guys trying to do the best they can do. I was proud of him.”1. Graham will fit in well with the Spurs’ fast-paced scheme“I am definitely going to fit in here,” Graham said.
He got off to a great start Friday, notching his fourth double-double of the season with 11 rebounds to go along with three assists in a season-best 35 minutes.
