Rodeo trip starts with 9th consecutive loss after a late flurry of turnovers

The Spurs' Zach Collins moves past the Bulls' Derrick Jones Jr., center, and DeMar DeRozan during Monday night’s game.CHICAGO — Spurs coach Gregg Popovich complained pre-game about how the NBA has become “boring...very boring” with the 3-point shot taking over.

Four players scored 19 or more points for the Bulls, who made only 6 of 22 from beyond the arc but sank 22 of 25 free throws to extend the Spurs’ losing streak to nine. In dropping the opening game of their nine-game rodeo trip, the Spurs lost for the 14th time in the last 15 games. Fueled by a sloppy closing effort by the Spurs, Chicago ended the game on a 45-21 run after the game was tied 83-83 with 2:05 left in the third quarter. The Bulls led by as many as 33 points late.

Here are three takeaways from the game, which marked the end of the season series between the clubs at one win apiece:During his three seasons with the Spurs, DeRozan often came on strong late after patiently feeling his way through the first half. Three of the Spurs’ frontcourt players finished with three turnovers: Johnson, Jakob Poeltl and Zach Collins.
