Two teenage girls accused in the death of a homeless man in Toronto are facing trial. The case has been split into two trials due to scheduling constraints. The trial continues today with additional security footage.

TORONTO — The trial of two teenage girls accused in the death of a homeless Toronto man is set to continue today with the presentation of additional security footage from the night of the incident. The two girls, among eight charged in connection with the death of Kenneth Lee, are alleged to have participated in the attack that led to his demise on December 18, 2022. Lee died after being beaten and stabbed at a downtown Toronto parkette.

The girls, who were 14 and 16 at the time of the incident, have pleaded not guilty to charges of second-degree murder. The younger girl initially pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter through her lawyer at the start of the trial on Monday, but the Crown rejected the plea. Prosecutors maintain that the younger girl inflicted the fatal injury upon Lee.On Monday, the court observed security footage depicting a group violently swarming Lee shortly after encountering him at the parkette. Following his death, eight girls were apprehended and charged within hours. Last year, three out of the eight pleaded guilty to manslaughter, while another pleaded guilty to assault causing bodily harm and assault with a weapon. These four individuals received probation sentences with specific conditions. The current trial, which commenced on Monday, is being conducted before a judge alone and is anticipated to last approximately two weeks. The remaining two girls are scheduled to face trial by jury in May, with the younger girl facing charges of second-degree murder and the older girl facing charges of manslaughter. The case was divided into two separate trials due to scheduling constraints. None of the teenagers involved can be identified publicly as they were minors at the time of the incident.
