The trial of the man accused in the high\u002Dprofile murder of Burnaby teen Marrisa Shen has been put over until January.
A trial date was initially set for September 2020 but the jury selection was cancelled and court was told that the trial wouldn’t start until 2021.
But on Wednesday, Dan McLaughlin, communications counsel for the B.C. Prosecution Service, said in an email that the trial date for the case has been postponed until Jan. 10 to accommodate various pretrial applications. He said that the current time estimate for the running of the jury trial, expected to be heard in B.C. Supreme Court in Vancouver, is three to four months.
Marrisa was reported missing by her family when she failed to return home by 11 p.m. on July 18, 2017. The girl’s body was found early the next morning in Central Park. The case sparked widespread media coverage. Ali, who is not to be confused with another individual of the same name and birth year who was convicted in a 2016 fatal hit and run, was arrested following an investigation by the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team and is being held in custody until his trial.
