Chris Carter, 38, sat in the back of the courtroom as Targett opened her case by playing the girl’s videotaped interview with a Royal Newfoundland Constabulary officer in May 2021. The identities of the two complainants, who are related, are protected by a court-ordered publication ban that extends not only to news coverage but all publication and broadcasts, including on social media. In the 2 ½-hour video, the teenager told RNC Const. Nadia Churchill that she was 12 years old when Carter first sexually assaulted her by touching her.
During the interview, the girl said she had learned just a day earlier about the allegations that Carter had sexually assaulted her female relative, though she had suspected it.
