Trey Yesavage Makes Final Start of Rookie Season for Toronto Blue Jays
Trey Yesavage, Toronto Blue Jays, Cincinnati Reds

Trey Yesavage allowed one run over two innings in a 5-1 loss to the Cincinnati Reds on Saturday in his final start of his rookie season, capping a year in which he missed 47 days after knee surgery.

Trey Yesavage made one final start for the Toronto Blue Jays on Saturday, allowing one run on two hits and a walk while striking out three over two innings in a 5-1 loss to the Cincinnati Reds.

The 23-year-old right-hander returned from surgery on Aug. 11 to repair the meniscus in his left knee, which caused him to miss 47 days through August and September. Even with the Blue Jays out of the playoff picture, Yesavage was determined to pitch again before the season ended. Instead of taking the rest of his rookie season off, Yesavage told anyone he could that he wanted to make as many starts as possible before the season's end.

Yesavage Pushes for Return From Knee Surgery

It was a big push for me, said Yesavage on Saturday. I let everybody that made the decisions on that know that I wanted to be back out there and wanted to play with these guys. I'm just glad they respected me and allowed me to have that opportunity. Yesavage made his return on Sept. 21 in a 4-3 loss to the Orioles in Baltimore, pitching two innings and allowing one run.

He finished his first full MLB season with a 5-6 record, a 3.69 earned-run average, and 97 strikeouts over 97 2/3 innings, with a 1.14 walks/hits per inning pitched. It was a relatively disappointing season after he rocketed through all five levels of the Blue Jays organization last year. He made a splash as a September callup in a critical role during Toronto's run to the World Series.

There were some bright spots and some spots that I wish would have been different, said Yesavage. Ultimately, I'm glad just the arm stayed healthy for the year and I'll stick with it into the off-season. Blue Jays manager John Schneider said he thinks Yesavage got enough innings in 2026 to set him up well for next year. Watching him today, you get frustrated that he missed the time he did down the stretch, said Schneider.

Pitcher Plans to Add Curveball to Repertoire

But I think the things that he learned when he was healthy and pitching every time through will be really important for him next year and going into the off-season. Yesavage wants to add to his pitching repertoire in the off-season. He intends to experiment with a curveball or a two-seam fastball over the winter. We'll see what works the best, Yesavage said.

Yesavage's determination to return despite the team's standing reflects his commitment to his development and his teammates. He emphasized that he wanted to be back out there and play with the guys, and he was grateful the organization respected his wishes. The experience of pitching through adversity and finishing the season on the mound should serve him well as he prepares for his second full MLB season.

Blue Jays Look for Step Forward in 2027

With the off-season ahead, Yesavage will focus on refining his pitches and adding new weapons to his arsenal. The Blue Jays will look for him to take another step forward in 2027 as part of their starting rotation. His rookie season may not have met all expectations, but the foundation is set for future success.
