Former Rep. Trey Gowdy said he had 'no idea' if he would ever join President Donald Trump's legal team — despite Trump saying Gowdy would be free to do so next year
Former Rep. Trey Gowdy on Sunday said he has "no idea" if he would ever join President Donald Trump's legal team, despite Trump saying the South Carolina Republican would be free to do so next year.
Gowdy was first floated earlier this month as a new outside lawyer to help the president fight impeachment — an announcement that Trump quickly walked back, citing "lobbying rules and regulations."In an appearance on CBS on Sunday, Gowdy cast doubt on whether he would ever represent the president."I don't represent the president as of today. I don't know what if anything will exist in January. It may be over.
Gowdy, who left Congress in January, said he was legally restricted in communicating with Congress on behalf of a client for a year. Gowdy conceded he had a "restrictive reading" of the statute. He said Trump needed people who "can represent him now before the House, the Senate and indirectly through television shows and print media."
"I don't even know if I'm going to be alive in January," he said, then went to an NFL reference. "If Dallas doesn't start playing better, I won't be alive in January. So, I don't know who I'll be representing."
