Just as it was hard to imagine the socio-economic impacts of the offshore oil industry in the late ’80s, it is difficult to imagine the likely impact of green energy production and export now. But done right, seizing the moment that’s in front of us, it could be massive. And Newfoundland and Labrador can produce a lot of it. As anyone who has lived here can attest, there is plenty of wind: by one estimate, up to 40 per cent of Canada’s potential wind energy capacity is located in the province.
The preoccupation of some with the Atlantic Loop, with transmission lines across multiple jurisdictions, seems to me to be the wrong direction. It’s time to look east. Europe has needed power — and increasingly, green power — for years. Converting renewable energy into hydrogen is essentially exporting power without the transmission lines.
