Edmonton Elks quarterback Tre Ford throws during warm up prior to facing the Hamilton Tiger Cats in Hamilton, Ont., on July 1, 2022.The brown bags can come off.

The Ticats, meanwhile, are falling well short of expectations heading into a season where their turf will host the Grey Cup, falling to 3-6 to sit at the bottom of their division. “I love playing here, I love coming back home. I had a bunch of fans in the stands,” Ford said. “It feels amazing. I think this is what we needed, we needed one game to turn it around and I think this one win is definitely going to help and hopefully we can build from here and just continue to win.”

Edmonton started out discombobulated, drawing a too-many-men penalty on the game’s opening drive, but Ford simply ran against zone coverage, picking up 28 yards with his legs on the first three snaps. That led to a 49-yard field-goal attempt by Marc Liegghio, who hit the upright to keep it scoreless midway through the first quarter.

The 10-play drive covered 80 yards and included back-to-back third-down conversions by short-yardage quarterback Taylor Cornelius.
