Travelers Share Petty Revenge Stories From Holidays

Travelers recount petty revenge stories, from removing towels at resorts to outsmarting scammers in Venice, highlighting how vacations can lead to creative payback.

Travelers have shared stories of petty revenge during their vacations, ranging from conflicts over lounge chairs at resorts to scams in Venice and seat disputes on trains. These anecdotes, posted online, illustrate how minor annoyances can escalate into creative acts of payback, often fueled by the stress of travel and a desire for justice.

One traveler described an all-inclusive resort where lounge chairs were routinely reserved with towels but left unused for hours. After being kicked off two loungers by an older couple and an attendant, the traveler began removing towels from unattended chairs every morning, leading to widespread complaints and eventually a sign stating that unattended towels would be removed. The traveler watched the chaos from their balcony, calling it a success.

Resort Lounge Chair Conflicts

At many resorts, the practice of reserving lounge chairs with personal items is a common source of frustration. Guests often wake early to claim spots by the pool or beach, only to leave them vacant for hours. This can lead to confrontations when others attempt to use the chairs, as one traveler experienced when they were asked to vacate by an attendant despite the chairs being unoccupied for most of the day.

In response, some travelers take matters into their own hands by clearing unattended towels, which can disrupt the status quo and prompt management to enforce rules. In the case described, the traveler's actions led to a policy change, demonstrating how persistent individual efforts can lead to broader solutions.

Train Seat Booking Disputes

Another story involved a train journey where a traveler found their reserved seat occupied by four men, one of whom refused to move despite the seat being clearly marked as booked. The ticket collector explained that only police could forcibly move the passenger, but they would not respond to such a minor issue. Faced with standing for the entire trip to London, the traveler decided to sit in first class, which offered better surroundings, power sockets, and free refreshments.

This highlights the limitations of seat reservations when enforcement is lacking, and how some passengers choose to upgrade themselves when faced with such situations. The traveler's proactive approach turned a potential inconvenience into a more comfortable journey, albeit at an additional cost.

Venice Scam Revenge

A more dramatic tale comes from a family vacation in Italy in the 1980s. While trying to find a ferry to Venice, a man approached the family and offered a boat ride for a reasonable price. However, once on board, the price was drastically increased, and the man and his associates became threatening, refusing to let anyone leave without paying. The family and another couple were forced to hand over all their cash.

As they docked near Saint Mark's Square, the traveler's mother, who had been the last to leave the boat, quickly grabbed the money from the scammer's back pocket, jumped off, and ran with the group to the square, where the scammers could not follow. She returned the other couple's money, and the family's trip ended up costing them nothing. This story underscores the risks of unauthorized tour operators and the potential for travelers to reclaim what was taken through quick thinking.

Travel experts note that being away from home creates a constant stream of background stressors, including unfamiliar surroundings, time pressure, fatigue, and the need to make numerous small decisions. These factors can heighten emotions and lead to confrontations or acts of revenge. While some responses may seem petty, they reflect the challenges of navigating new environments and the human desire to restore a sense of fairness.
