Trash talk on litter in Cape Breton: 'The community has to be part of the solution'

SYDNEY, N.S. — Since Meghan Richardson started a cleanup revolution in the Cape Breton Regional Municipality in mid-March, she’s picked up almost 300 sacks of trash on her own and that’s not counting the hundreds of followers inspired to follow suit.

Richardson, who now has about 450 followers on her Facebook group, held her first cleanup prior to the World Women’s Curling Championship in Sydney in March. And she said she thinks CBRM should pick up tagged garbage as it just ends up becoming litter because many people just leave it on the curb even though it’s been rejected.

Aikens said the trash was particularly bad this spring, with a lot of it emerging after February’s two storms with a combined 200 cm of snow delaying garbage pickup.Richardson is harnessing a feeling of frustration and anger many people share about why the community can’t be kept cleaner and that in previous years it seemed like the same groups of people were paying attention to the problem.

Some people choose to litter. Then there’s improper handling of household garbage, accidental pushing of garbage around after storms, illegal dumping and persistent discarding of cigarette butts, which don't break down.There's no easy answer to bad habits.
