Ottawa Centre MPP Joel Harden and some community groups are urging people to attend a counterprotest in Highland Park.

The Ottawa-Carleton District School Board asked people not to attend the area near two of its schools on Friday, arguing that “schools are places of learning and should not be the targets of political protests.”

In a statement ahead of the rally, the school board said: “This individual, as well as others associated with this demonstration, have a history of aligning with and promoting inflammatory, transphobic, and hateful content against members of the 2SLGBTQ+ community. Emily Quaile, who lives in the neighbourhood, said Friday she started to organize a counterprotest when she heard about Elston’s appearance online.“That’s a devastating thing. So I really had to stand up and do something.”

That means normal instructional routines continue inside the school, but the outside doors are locked and no one is permitted to enter or leave the building. During the lunch hour, students will be able to eat in the cafeteria and purchase food there.
