This Decepticon may be getting an update.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT The advent of the Energon Universe is upon us, as Skybound Entertainment is weeks away from the launch of its all-new Transformers series. Taking place in a rebooted shared continuity, the series has already announced which Autobots and Decepticons will be featured in the new comic, but one variant cover just revealed another Decepticon will apparently be in the debut line-up.

Skybound shocked the world with the surprise appearance of the Transformer Jetfire in the Energon Universe’s launch title, Void Rivals #1. Now, Eisner Award-winning cartoonist Daniel Warren Johnson is launching the rebooted Transformers series. While the previously announced Decepticon line-up consists of Starscream, Skywarp, Soundwave, Laserbeak and Rumble, the variant cover for the first issue by artist Cliff Chiang, released by Skybound, includes another bad ’bot: the mini-con Ravage.Cliff Chiang’s Transformers #1 Variant Introduces Decepticon Ravage While Ravage's appearance in Transformers #1 remains unconfirmed, Cliff Chiang's variant cover is still a beautiful piece by a master artist.

Which Other Transformers Will Appear In The Energon Universe? It makes sense that Ravage would also be appearing alongside his fellow mini-cons Laserbeak and Rumble, as all three are tied to Soundwave. The Decepticon’s alternate mode is famously a cassette tape player, and the original toy included the mini-cassette tapes that transformed into their own distinct robot modes, which were stored in Soundwave’s chest.

It is possible that the Energon Transformers series will find Ravage and the other mini-cons updated to suit a contemporary audience. On the other hand, writer/artist Daniel Warren Johnson has a clear affinity for the Transformers' G1 era, explaining why the new series leans heavily into classic designs, and suggesting that while the series depicts the Transformers arriving on Earth for the first time, they may find themselves having an affinity for archaic technology in their own right.
