Within the construction zone, commuter traffic will be escorted by a pilot vehicle during half-hour periods between 7 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. with prearranged permits twice daily. The escorts will also accompany school buses and emergency vehicles. “After this five-day closure, there will be no additional full-day closures of Highway 1 through the Kicking Horse Canyon until fall 2023,” said the ministry.
When construction is complete, the highway will be widened to four lanes, which the ministry said will make it safer and a more reliable route through the pass. Construction is expected to be finished in the coming winter.
