Tranmere Rovers executive chairman and former CEO of The Football Association Mark Palios has called for a radical rethink of club ownership and competition structure in English football.
In addition to the well-documented huge losses sustained by Championship clubs, this past season has seen an alarming number of lower league clubs including Bolton, Bury, Macclesfield, Oldham and Blackpool suffer serious financial and mismanagement problems.
It’s like the updraft from a fire, it fuels the whole wage inflation scenario and it drags through the pyramid a wage inflation that is unsustainable. Palios’ radical proposal would involve those clubs competing in Europe and who in reality operate in a global market, having different regulations enforced in domestic competitions to enable greater fairness, similar to homegrown restrictions that are currently enforced.
While wanting a more holistic view of the game's structure, Palios believes there is merit in continuing with the self-help that is constantly being called for by fans and owners alike. In the new structure, a percentage would belong to a fan interests group, with another percentage owned by the local council and the remainder free for purchase by an outside investor.
