Escalating trade tensions between the United States and Canada are significantly impacting the travel industry, leading to a steep decline in cross-border travel and a rise in domestic tourism.

The escalating trade dispute between the United States and Canada is having a significant impact on the travel industry, leading to a sharp decline in cross-border travel and a shift towards domestic tourism. Industry experts report a dramatic decrease in demand for Canada -U.S. flights, with bookings down over 70 percent for the spring and summer seasons. This trend is attributed to uncertainty surrounding the trade war and its potential consequences for travellers.

John Grant, Chief Analyst at OAG Aviation Worldwide, notes that the 'law of unintended consequences' is once again affecting the airline industry, adding to an already softening market. The economic consequences of this travel downturn are becoming increasingly evident. Visit California, a non-profit organization promoting tourism in the state, anticipates a 15 percent decline in Canadian travel to the United States this year. Canada is the United States' top source of international visitors, generating US$2.1 billion in lost spending, as estimated by the U.S. Travel Association. The association highlights a confluence of factors impacting travel, including a strong U.S. dollar, a slowing American economy, visa delays, safety concerns, travel restrictions, and a perception of diminished hospitality toward visitors. Travel agents and tour operators are witnessing firsthand the impact of these trends. Karl Gilder, owner of Travac Tours, reports a complete cessation of bookings for his signature New York tour, which previously attracted 25 to 30 buses annually. Phyllis LeBlanc, owner of PT Tours, attributes the decline to high exchange rates and a lack of trust in the Trump administration. Survey results from the International Inbound Travel Association reveal that over 80 percent of its members report cancellations, slowed bookings, and negative feedback regarding U.S. travel. David Levy, owner of Spread Love Tours in New York City, notes a drastic drop in Canadian high school class trip bookings, which once contributed significantly to his revenue. This shift in travel patterns is also reflected in a surge in domestic travel within Canada. Canadian Airbnb searches for domestic stays have increased by around 20 percent, indicating Canadians are actively exploring and supporting local tourism options
