A tour guide tragically died at a former Colorado gold mine last year after falling out of a crowded elevator during a descent. According to an investigative report obtained by The Associated Press, Patrick Weier, 46, was killed at the Mollie Kathleen Mine near Colorado Springs when the elevator door swung open and caught the side of the mine shaft. As the elevator continued its descent, Weier fell out, was dragged, and landed on top of one of the tourists.
The report, which details the harrowing events of the October accident, reveals that Weier struggled to fit into the elevator due to the large group of tourists. He asked them to squeeze together, but ultimately failed to secure the elevator door properly. Shortly after the descent began, the elevator hit the shaft wall, causing debris to fly and passengers to lose their hard hats. In the darkness and confusion, Weier rang the bell to signal the operator to stop the elevator, but it was too late. The door swung open, dislodging Weier who fell out and landed on a tourist in the upper car. The accident left two groups of tourists stranded. The group in the top car found Weier's body on top of one of them. Another tourist in the lower car was pinned by the bent door until rescuers arrived. Two women from the top car managed to climb up a ladder to seek help, while authorities worked to ensure the safe return of the remaining tourists. The mine's website states that it is closed until further notice. Weier is survived by his 7-year-old son, and several tourists who went on tours with him have donated to an online fundraiser for his son, remembering his profound knowledge of the area's mining history
