The Toronto Zoo has confirmed a significant data breach that exposed sensitive personal information of guests and members, including names, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, and partial credit card details.

Toronto Zoo officials have confirmed a major data breach that compromised sensitive personal information, including names, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, and partial credit card details of guests and members. The breach, discovered in early 2024, involved the theft of transaction records dating back to 2000. Some of this data was leaked on the dark web last year, according to officials. The compromised information includes details linked to general admission and membership purchases.

Additionally, guests who made credit card transactions between January 2022 and April 2023 had the last four digits of their credit card numbers and expiration dates exposed. Upon discovering the cyberattack, the zoo immediately notified affected employees, former employees, volunteers, and donors. They are urging everyone affected, as well as all guests and members, to remain vigilant, carefully scrutinize unsolicited and suspicious communications, and regularly review their financial account statements. The zoo has reported the breach to Ontario's Information and Privacy Commissioner, who has initiated an investigation. In response to the incident, the zoo has strengthened its cybersecurity measures, collaborating with the City of Toronto's Chief Information Security Office to enhance defenses and improve security monitoring. Zoo officials expressed appreciation for the patience and support of their employees, volunteers, members, and visitors as they worked to address this situation
