Toronto and surrounding areas are under a severe thunderstorm warning, with Environment Canada calling for very strong winds and possible nickel-size hail. The warning is one of three alerts for the Toronto area, along with a severe thunderstorm watch and a special weather statement. According to the warning, meteorologists are tracking a severe thunderstorm capable of producing very strong wind gusts of up to 100 km/h and up to nickel-size hail. The areas that could be affected are: Oshawa, Cobourg, Downtown Toronto, Ajax, Bowmanville, Port Hope, Darlington Provincial Park, Orono, Newcastle, Serpent Mounds Provincial Park, Roseneath, Hastings, Toronto Islands, The Beaches, Scarborough Bluffs, Clarington, Leskard, Kirby, Newtonville and Osaca. "Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles," the federal weather agency said. The weather also prompted Scotiabank Area to ask fans to leave the tailgate party at Maple Leaf Square, ahead of Game 5 between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Ottawa Senators, but the space has been reopened. Fans are now reportedly trickling back into the square. An inclement weather warning has been issued, and fans in the Tailgate at Maple Leaf Square are asked to exit the Square safely and head to nearby shelter. Residents were urged to use caution when walking or driving in the area.According to the watch, "dangerous thunderstorms" could produce "damaging" wind gusts of up to 110 km/h. There is also a risk of a tornado, the federal weather agency said, adding the watch will be in place until early this evening. "Large hail can damage property and cause injury. Very strong wind gusts can damage buildings, down trees and blow large vehicles off the road," Environment Canada said. "Be prepared for severe weather. Take cover immediately, if threatening weather approaches. Stay indoors when a thunderstorm strikes. There isn't a place outside that is safe during a thunderstorm."According to the special weather statement, strong southwest winds are expected to sweep the city Tuesday afternoon. There could be frequent gusts to 80 km/h. The statement is in place until early Tuesday evening. "Motorists, especially in high profile vehicles, may expect hazardous driving conditions on highways subject to strong cross winds."
