Toronto transit service will continue until 2 a.m. Friday even in the case of a strike, the chair of the Toronto Transit Commission said Thursday as labour talks hurtled towards a strike deadline.
Toronto city Coun. Jamaal Myers said in a statement that the agency and the union representing nearly 12,000 transit workers have agreed to keep the service running past the deadline “so everyone can get to their destination safely.” While no deal has been reached at this time, Myers said he’s “encouraged” both sides remain at the bargaining table.
“The TTC is committed to securing a deal that avoids any job action that will be disruptive to the lives of millions of Torontonians,” he said.will be in a legal position to strike just after midnight, raising the prospect of the first Toronto transit strike since 2008.
