Star photographer Steve Russell is one of the winners of the National Pictures of the Year Awards. The News Photographers Association of Canada has awarded Russell with the best feature photo of the year.

Toronto Star photojournalist Steve Russell has won the best feature photo of the year by the News Photographers Association of Canada.

“It was interesting because you had to wear a mask but you didn't need to wear anything else there ,” Russell recalls. “It was meant to feature how they were dealing with the pandemic.” Despite working at the Star since 1996, and a long record of accomplishments, Russell was surprised to hear he’d won.

“It is kind of funny. Considering all the serious events that I shot that year, you look at that picture and you ask ‘why would this one win in that kind of year?’ But it’s a fun picture. But the kind of year we had, people need to smile. It's a unique view of a place not too many people know about.”
