Chief Saunders’s call comes with protests planned in support of the family of Regis Korchinski-Paquet and some raising parallels to George Floyd, a black man’s death that came during an arrest in Minneapolis
A blue ribbon, notes and flowers are left on the lawn outside an apartment building at 100 High Park Ave. in Toronto where Regis Korchinski-Paquet fell to her death in the presence of police.Toronto’s police chief has called on the province’s Special Investigations Unit to expedite its investigation into the death of a woman who fell from a high-rise balcony while in the presence of officers.
Chief Saunders confirmed that police received three 911 calls around 5:15 p.m. on Wednesday about an assault at an apartment building on High Park Avenue, at least two of which mentioned knives. “In a case like this, when we’re talking about assaults occurring, and knives being present and being used, front-line police officers … have to restore calm, investigate, and then proceed in accordance to the law,” he said. “There’s no way that I would put a nurse in the middle of a knife fight.”
Chief Saunders said this case is a “textbook” example of the need for body-worn cameras, which he said he plans to begin allocating within the next few months.
