One of three Toronto police officers who was acquitted in 2017 after a high-profile sexual assault trial has been criminally charged again, police said Friday.

acquitted in 2017 after a high-profile sexual assault trialConst. Sameer Kara is charged with assault after an early morning incident in the area of Dundas Street West and Keele Street, where police say officers responded to a radio call for an assault.

Toronto police allege Kara, 39, was in a dispute with a woman and hit her. No one was sent to hospital. The assault charge comes five years after Kara and two of his Toronto police colleagues, officers Joshua Cabero and Leslie Nyznik, wereafter a social “Rookie Buy Night” in January 2015. The officers were found not guilty after a much-watched trial before Superior Court Justice Anne Molloy, who said she could not be sure what happened in a downtown Toronto hotel room that night, and therefore needed to acquit.

Molloy found the complainant’s evidence not credible or reliable enough for a guilty verdict, but also said she did not necessarily believe Nyznik, who was the sole officer to testify. Toronto police said Friday that Kara has been suspended with pay, as required under Ontario’s Police Services Act.
