Toronto-funded camps for Ukrainian children are 'an oasis in the dark' Via janecstevenson

Toronto-born Hrycyna — a full-time teacher at Catholic high school Our Lady Queen of the World in North York — began running camps 15 years ago in Ukraine so she knew what she was doing.

“It was not officially registered at the time as a charity in Canada, but with time, we were able to do that and I’ve been able to run a camp this summer as well as last winter. And this summer we doubled our numbers so we had 110 children from all over Ukraine.”.A teacher for the last 13 years –10 in Toronto and three in Ukraine before that — Hrycyna was a natural to run the camps and successfully pitched the idea to the Ukranian-Canadian charity, BCU Foundation.

“We do a wilderness training camp, as well,“ said Hrycyna. “It’s not just about taking care of the overt therapies like storytelling therapy, and art therapy and music therapy with these children. It’s also about making sure they hone their leadership skills and they’re able to go to a camp in Ukraine and are able to associate positive memories with their country of birth.”The camps run for two weeks and are for children aged 12-17.

The camps are held at an undisclosed location in mountains close to the Polish border and are required to be at least 50 kilometres away from any military targets and 30 kilometres away from railway lines. But that doesn’t mean they are without danger.Article content
