Unthinkable collapse on road for Reds
The game was a tale of two totally different halves. DC United dominated the first and Toronto fought back well in the second. At least until the last few minutes.
Perhaps worse than giving up two late goals, and losing, was the fact that the Reds lost $14 million winger Lorenzo Insigne mid-way through the first half with a lower body injury. Insigne went down and left the game and then tried to get back into the action, only to have to leave a second time for good. He was replaced by Ayo Akinola in the 34th minute. There was no update on his condition last night.
Though the Reds almost completely revitalized their dysfunctional back line in the off-season, it looked like same-old, same-old as DC United jumped into a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute when Klich picked up a pass at midfield from Russell Canouse and marched down the field completely unmolested before right-footing a shot from outside the box to the bottom left corner.
TFC responded well in the second half and opened the frame with a goal by newcomer Diomande, but the goal was ruled off-side – the Norwegian’s first real chance of the match.
