Toronto is deploying more traffic agents in an effort to manage congestion in the city.
, the city said 30 agents will deploy this year, with most working at “critical intersections” during peak traffic periods in the morning and afternoon.
Traffic agents help manage congestion by directing the flow of traffic and encouraging people to follow the rules of the road. The city hired 11 new employees for the role, and said they’ll be placed at a number of “high-priority” locations across Toronto. There are 14 traffic agents working for the city, with plans to hire and train the remaining 16 “as quickly as possible,” according to the release.
Toronto police will also provide special constables and police constables on a six-month pilot basis to help with traffic management during peak periods, the city said.According to the city, the pilot resulted in a 90 per cent reduction in blocked intersections and “at least a 70 per cent reduction in blockage of intersections by pedestrians.”
