A Toronto police officer and his public servant girlfriend, who pulled off a daring scheme to deprive a dead man’s estate of $834,000 through a forged will, fake witnesses and a series of lies, have each been convicted of fraud.
After a three-and-a-half week trial likened to a reality TV show or Netflix series, jurors returned with their verdicts Friday morning after retiring to deliberate Thursday around noon.
Balgobin, in her capacity as a senior client representative with the Office of the Public Guardian and Trustee, or OPGT, was responsible for administering Sommerfeld’s affairs while he was alive and assisted in settling his estate when he died. She was also convicted of breach of trust. Konashewych, in an affidavit filed during probate, asserted they met in 2005 when he was 22 and Sommerfeld in his 60s. Konashewych did not testify and the jury heard little of their unlikely friendship, although Balgobin said they’d met at Woodbine casino and racetrack where Konashewych worked as a security guard before joining the Toronto Police Service in August 2008.
