Manifesto has long prided itself on its commitment to creating inclusive programming that reflects the ever-changing dynamics of Toronto’s youth culture and music scene. Meet four young artists performing at the festival this weekend.
On Aug. 11, 1973, a Jamaican teenager named DJ Kool Herc threw a modest back-to-school party for his younger sister in the rec room of his South Bronx apartment complex. As legend goes, this was where Herc debuted his revolutionary style of turntable experimentation, giving birth to a genre of music that reshaped popular culture over the next half-century.
This week, on the same date, Manifesto — a grassroots organization dedicated to spotlighting Toronto’s vibrant music and arts community — celebrates the 50th anniversary of hip hop with a series of events that explore the genre’s impact on pop culture, culminating in a massive festival at Toronto’s RBC Echo Beach this Friday.
