The author analyzes the Toronto Blue Jays' disappointing season, arguing that the team needs more than just calling up relievers and hoping for the best. They criticize the use of Springer as a leadoff hitter and advocate for giving young players like Lukes and Loperfido more consistent playing time.
So this will be fun. You and I know that no manager would make a silk purse out of the pig’s ear that has been this team this year. The bullpen has been awful, but I don’t see how this group could have been better, with Romano injured, Mayza and Swanson awful and a lack of good arms behind them. I am tired with the ‘call a reliever up, have him sit in the bullpen for a week or two, and then send him out for the next gut to sit in the bullpen.
But still, why not optimize? The other part is that I would like them to DH Springer the rest of the way and let's see Lukes and Loperfido every day. Bo has had a poor start and then been hurt, which hasn’t helped. If they were going to win, Bo would have to be Bo. I have some complaints about how the new guys have been used, but getting enough playing time for that many young guys is tough.
