The threat for severe weather across much of the Chicago area was heightened Friday afternoon as weather alerts, including tornado watches, were issued for a majority of the region - just as the first of two rounds of dangerous storms began to arrive. Most recently, a severe thunderstorm warning went into effect for central Will County and southeastern Cook County in Illinois as well as Lake and Porter counties in northwest Indiana until 5:30 p.m.
Additionally, severe thunderstorm warnings were issued for eastern and central Kankakee County until 5 p.m., as well as southwestern Will County, eastern Grundy County and northwestern Kankakee County until 5:15 p.m.A severe thunderstorm warning also went into effect for southern DeKalb County and northern LaSalle County. It is set to expire at 5 p.m.at 4:13 p.m.
Severe storms continue to advance across NE IL with large hail as the main threat, however; tornadoes and damaging winds remain possible. Frequent lightning is also occurring with these storms and is striking ahead of the storms. Storms are racing NE at 65 mph
