A storm system carrying multiple tornadoes and powerful winds tore across the Great Plains and Midwestern states on Wednesday. The National Weather Service said the system had the highest number of hurricane-force wind gusts in a single day since 2004.
Meanwhile, Minnesota saw its first-ever tornadoes in December. One was reported just northwest of Albert Lea with damaged reported in Hartland, while the other was in Plainview. Both were first reported at around 8 p.m. on Wednesday."Strong and widespread winds are expected this evening through the overnight hours. The strongest of winds will occur within the line of storms that will pass through this evening . Some of these storms could produce tornadoes.
As of about 2 a.m. CT on Thursday morning, the north-west of Minnesota was most impacted by the winter storm, but high wind warnings impacted the whole state. Photos and videos on social media show overturned vehicles and the carapaces of houses that have been devastated by the tornadoes that hit Iowa and Minnesota on Wednesday evening.
