USD racks up most lopsided victory in nine years over Division III La Verne
When the University of San Diego’s starting defense was announced before Saturday night’s season opener against La Verne, the defenders were nowhere to be found, having not made it down the ramp at Torero Stadium.
La Verne had 14 possessions. Eleven ended in punts, two with interceptions and the last drive of the game on downs at the USD 38. USD outgained the visitors 492 yards to 108. The Leopards rushed 23 times, gaining 14 yards.Not easily pleased and noting the level of competition, head coach Dale Lindsey said of his defense, “I thought at times they played quite well. I didn’t say I was happy. When you get happy you get fired.”While the final was a blowout, it took USD’s offense awhile to get going.
Quarterback Judd Erickson, who emerged as the starter after an intense battle with Grant Sergent and Re-Al Mitchell in summer camp, played spotty in the first half. The sixth-year graduate student started completing just 4 of 15 passes.But Erickson closed strong, finishing 12 of 26 for 228 yards and two TDs.Poway High product Vance Jefferson caught four passes for 107 yards, including TDs of 59 and 15 yards.
