'The tweet was meant to be humorous and light-hearted, but was hurtful to some,' the department wrote in a follow-up tweet.
"Nothing says Father's Day like encouraging people to snitch on their dads and experience police violence firsthand," tweeted one responder.
"That's truly disgusting!" tweeted another."Who thought that was a good idea Deleting the message is not enough! An apology and serious community outreach is required to begin to make up for this!" Another wrote,"In case anyone doubts police in America have forfeited all human decency and the very notion of right and wrong."
The Topeka Police Department insisted the offending tweet was meant to be"humorous and light-hearted."The original tweet was deleted within an hour and, on Monday, an apology was sent out via the same account. It claimed the Father's Day message was sent by someone on its social media team and was meant"to be humorous and light-hearted."

After realizing this, the tweet was quickly deleted. We would like to sincerely apologize for this mistake.
