Discover fascinating research on the evolutionary adaptations of female whale species and their longer lifespans due to menopause.

Find out about a groundbreaking study on the extended lifespan of female whale species due to evolutionary adaptations and menopause. This enabled them to provide prolonged care for their females.

The study also illustrated that even though the whales and humans have 90 million years of evolution difference, they still share significantly similar life histories, which evolved independently. “There are more than 5,000 mammal species, and only six are known to go through menopause,” he added. “So the question is: how and why did menopause evolve? Our study provides some of the answers to this fascinating puzzle.”In addition to surpassing the lifespans of females from comparable-sized species, females of these five whale species also outlive males. For instance, female killer whales can survive into their 80s, while males typically do not live beyond 40 years.

“Secondly, the females must have an opportunity to help in ways that improve the survival chances of their family. For example, female toothed whales are known to share food and use their knowledge to guide the group to find food when it is in short supply.”
