Bozhi Chen, a researcher at the National University of Singapore who co-authored the study, said the research strengthens existing associations between screen time and children's health.

Sarah Benjamin-Neelon, an associate professor of public health at Johns Hopkins University, said the long-term effects of screen time on toddlers and young children remain uncertain, but the study offers"some insight into possible negative effects."

The best way for parents to cut back on screen time, Klaas suggested, is to be active with their children. Despite possible cultural differences between Singapore and the United States, Klaas cited a similar study in the United States that found similar levels of screen time in American children. Dorothea Dumuid, a researcher at the University of South Australia who also is not affiliated with the study, said in a statement screen time may be an indication of other factors not addressed in the study.
