Tomlinson: Our brains search for patterns, but they can mislead us when evaluating people

Think about the following jobs and imagine the person doing the work: gospel singer, running back, saxophone player, bus driver, government clerk. How do they dress? How do they look? How do they behave? Most white people, though certainly not all, will imagine a Black person in most of the first set of jobs. Most Anglos will also imagine mostly white people in the second set.
Vision is the most critical sense for people who possess it, flooding our minds with the information we use to recognize patterns. Our brains are especially attuned to other people’s appearances because they can be dangerous predators.We developed language so we could share information. Humans have passed along stereotypes, biases and favoritism since the first grunts became words.
