Transit Cape Breton is adding new stops across the island to serve resident transit needs. FileThe transit buses of the Cape Breton Regional Municipality should not have been off the road entirely – even on the main corridor routes – on New Year’s Eve, Dec. 27 and Jan. 2.
The decision to park all the buses on New Year’s Eve borders on the imprudent given the size and density of Transit Cape Breton’s service area. Comparably sized municipalities not only operate public transit on New Year’s Eve, but they also add buses, run later into the night and, in some cases, eliminate all the fares on New Year’s Eve.What about comparable municipalities?
No other conventional public transit service that I am aware of extends its holidays to Dec. 27 or Jan. 2. Bridgewater on Nova Scotia’s South Shore has a population of 8,900. It has had a bus service only since 2017. Its transit admittedly did take New Year’s Eve off , but, unlike in CBRM, passengers were being picked up on Dec. 27 and Jan. 2.
The additional holiday breaks are not mentioned on the Transit Cape Breton page of the CBRM, which lists the holidays for the year. The full list of no-service days for the holidays was posted on CBRM’s Facebook page on Dec. 22.
