But maybe I ought to have put it even more starkly: Stop the slaughter! Stop the bombing! This madness has to stop! Now!That means no contortions about “proportionality.” No legalistic hair-splitting to justify “collateral damage”. No sociological rationalizations invoking anti-colonial struggle.In addition to fellow parishioners, I am taking some inspiration during this appalling time from another group of people whom I respect and admire.
Jones was an incredible Quaker writer, organizer and mystic. He shared in the Nobel Peace Prize in 1947. I particularly like his book The Soul Within – and all his books about spiritual reformers. He wrote: “Even the ideals of the soul are thrown into the all-embracing hopper for the grist of war, and they do not always come through uncrushed, unreduced.”
