Hazel McCallion, the internationally recognized former mayor of Mississauga, died on Sunday. She was just shy of her 102nd birthday. Her policy legacy and ...

McCallion’s vigour and longevity were probably partly genetic. Some of her family members lived well beyond the average life expectancy. For example, her maternal grandfather, James Urias Travers, died in 1923 in his 90th year.Hazel Journeaux’s home community of Port-Daniel on Quebec’s Gaspé Peninsula gave her a good start.

I visited her family’s old homestead. Even during the Depression, there was enough wholesome food, much of it from the small farm that surrounded the house. McCallion mused about her healthy diet, with lots of vegetables and fish. “There was no junk food.” Indeed, she put her finger on the same thing decades earlier. In 1950, she wrote to young Anglicans: “Our lives can be wasted so easily if we allow ourselves to drift through life without aim or purpose.”
