The former head of Radius-TWC formed indie upstart Neon with Alamo Drafthouse founder Tim League and immediately made a splash with “I, Tonya,” the dark comedy biopic about former Olympic skater Tonya Harding.
Eager to differentiate itself from competitors like A24 and Netflix, Neon executed slow-and-steady marketing, including a profanity-laced red-band trailer that piqued interests. The strategy worked: Margot Robbie got a best actress nod, Allison Janney won for best supporting, and the film hauled in some $54 million. Quinn has likened his corporate philosophy to a decalog: releasing just 10 films a year to be able to dig deep on each.
