ICYMI - TomHanks Zooms with the Post's Calum Marsh about his need to keep it real
Admittedly very little about 2020 has seemed ordinary. But it is impossible to pretend there’s anything normal about a video call with America’s most celebrated living actor, recently recovered from COVID-19, the first A-lister to contract the virus, now chatting with me breezily from his offices in Santa Monica.you? I ask, with perhaps too much urgency. “I’m alright,” he quickly reassures me.
— but with no complaints.” He is indeed back in Los Angeles, he explains, after that much-publicized coronavirus scare this spring in Australia. He’s at Playtone HQ, busy fielding interviews, plainly indefatigable. And my questions about the movie aren’t nearly as bad as the ones he had to answer a few months ago.
Hanks was obliged to explain much to these people. He straightened them out about port: “Guys, we’re not making that up. That’s what they said.” He rejected their suggestion that the movie cut away to the admiralty: “We’ve seen that before. It’s been done.” And he pushed back on the idea, much peddled in the industry, that such authentic detail would leave the audience confused. “Exact terminology, the audience picks up on that,” Hanks says. “You know why? Because the audience is smart.
This patina of authentic naval detail will resonate with a certain kind of viewer — the sort of person who gleefully geeks out on accurate sonar pings and what destroyed submarines sound like as they drown. “It’s nerd heaven,” Hanks agrees. “It’s fanboy central.” But it isn’t merely trifling nerdery, either. It’s about distinguishingfrom the countless naval war pictures that came before it — about subverting the obvious conventions.
On the other hand, this is still a movie. And Hanks knew, writing the screenplay, that there ought to be limits on just how real this stuff would get. “You have to step back from the documentarian aspect of it and realize you are making a cinematic movie that requires a narrative,” he says. He concedes minor inaccuracies: a long delay in the acknowledgement of an order, for instance, held for dramatic effect. “That would never happen.
