Thursday, Feb. 23: This time, it shouldn\u0027t take 15 months to name a new boss for the national police force, says one reader.
Of the 56 thoughtful recommendations tabled by Justice Paul Rouleau on the use of the federal Emergencies Act, the last two are the most important. RCMP Commissioner Brenda Lucki will retire on March 17. The last time an RCMP commissioner announced their retirement, it took the government 15 months to name a replacement. Our national police force cannot afford to wait that long. In addition to implementing Rouleau’s recommendations that are germane to the RCMP mandate, the next commissioner will need to address operational shortcomings highlighted in the Mass Casualty Commission inquiry into the Portapique, N.S.
Contract policing is currently being called into question by some municipalities and provinces that are examining policing options other than the RCMP. In order to meet these challenges, the next commissioner should have broad and established policing experience, coupled with a practical appreciation of the complexity of the RCMP policing model, and an extensive network of established contacts within the public safety domain.
