Tuesday, Oct. 10: A reader shares admiration and hope for the first Indigenous premier of a Canadian province.
All Canadians should be celebrating Wab Kinew’s historic win in Manitoba. This is truly a heartwarming tale of turning one’s life around, redemption, truth-talking and leadership.
As the elders of society, we should be held in high esteem. We have knowledge of the history and ways of our country and its society. We have wisdom, family history, stories and traditions. So please show us the respect we deserve and support when we need it. Pierre Elliott Trudeau was Canada’s 15th prime minister and certainly had a hand in shaping Canada’s destiny. While Mackenzie King’s antisemitic policies are nothing to be proud of, the same can be said for Trudeau’s inaction on abolishing residential schools during his tenure. This, like King’s Jewish policy, should not be overlooked.Like King, Trudeau has a statue in Vaughan and several schools named after him; now may be a good time to also reconsider how we commemorate his legacy.
The Nazi monument in Oakville should immediately come down, or monuments of Sir John A. Macdonald should go back up.
