Philippe Couillard and his Liberal roared back to power in Quebec City on this date in 2014, less than two years after they were defeated by Pauline Marois and the PQ. This time, Couillard, a medical doctor by profession who had been a star member of then Premier Jean Charest’s cabinet, headed a caucus of 70 MNAs.

Couillard is perhaps best-known for balancing Quebec’s budget. He later found himself in the midst of controversy after his government banned the use of face-coverings when Quebecers access public services. This was primarily aimed at Muslim women who wore a niqab or burqa. After a single term, Couillard and his Liberals were defeated by the Coalition Avenir Québec and remain in opposition today.
