One of the most important Canadian portrait artists of his generation, J.W.L. Forster, passed into history on this date in 1938. As a young man he studied painting in Toronto, England and Paris, eventually establishing his own studio in Canada. Before long he was one of the most sought-after portrait artists in the country and his commissions included portraits of Timothy Eaton, Alexander Graham Bell, and other leading personalities of the period.
