As is tradition at Art’s History, we pause today to celebrate a Prime Ministerial birthday. It is Sir John Abbott’s turn. Born on this date in 1821, in what is now Saint-André-d’Argenteuil, Quebec, he was destined to become our third Prime Minister, succeeding Sir John A. himself in 1891 upon the former’s death while still in high office.
Voters sent him to the House of Commons in 1867 and he was then summoned to the Senate in 1887 by Sir John A. He was a member of the Red Chamber when he became Prime Minister in June 1891, the first prime minister to lead from the Senate.
