Future Father of Confederation William Henry Pope was born on this date in 1825 at Bedeque, PEI. A lawyer who later became the editor of PEI main’s conservative newspaper at the time, he entered politics in 1963 and would go on to attend two of the Confederation Conferences. Along the way, he became a ruthless proponent of the island joining the new Dominion.
Despite Pope’s best efforts in support of Confederation, a cause he publicly fought for in sharp editorials and other writings in his newspaper, the, PEI gave Confederation a pass in 1867 and didn’t join the new nation-building project until 1870.William Henry Pope Arthur Milnes is an accomplished public historian and award-winning journalist. He was research assistant on The Rt. Hon. Brian Mulroney’s best-selling Memoirs and also served as a speechwriter to then-Prime Minister Stephen Harper and as a Fellow of the Queen’s Centre for the Study of Democracy under the leadership of Tom Axworthy. A resident of Kingston, Ontario, Milnes serves as the in-house historian at the 175 year-old Frontenac Club Hotel.
