Consumers of Canadian whisky have much to celebrate today. It is, of course, the birthday of Joseph E. Seagram, perhaps the most important distiller in Canadian history. A self-made man who was the son of immigrants, his hard work and vision led to his company, Seagram’s, becoming the largest seller of Canadian whisky in the world.

Outside of his business interests, Seagram also enjoyed a distinguished political career. After serving as a Waterloo, Ontario municipal councillor, his local voters sent him to represent them in the House of Commons in 1896 as their Conservative MP. He was re-elected in 1900 and 1904.is an accomplished public historian and award-winning journalist. He was research assistant on The Rt. Hon.
