Last week, in Cali, Colombia, thousands of people from around the world gathered to celebrate nature and the efforts that countries are making to protect it at the 16th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity. Only two years ago, Canada played host to a meeting that culminated in the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, an ambitious plan that included a collective commitment to protect 30 per cent of the planet by 2030.

It will ensure there is a process for environmental impact assessments, place-based protections, and access and benefit-sharing for all countries from the discovery of marine genetic resources that could provide the next generation of life-saving treatments. Fourteen countries have currently ratified the treaty. In Canada, a cabinet decision is required before we can become the next.
